Zillow Launches New LGBT Local Legal Protections

Earlier this month, we reported on the hoops people within the LGBT community must jump through to ensure their moving and living processes are protected under law. The data was gathered and presented by Zillow, where the company discovered that only 22 states, as well as the country’s capitol, have laws to prevent discrimination and evictions based on a person’s sexual and gender identity

Working along those same lines, Zillow has announced a new resource to aid in that search for regions that hold orders to prevent such discrimination. Called the LGBT Local Legal Protections, the data-powered feature helps people looking for listings in communities where state and local regulations protect those who identify as being LGBT.

Now, all property listings on Zillow include information about the home’s jurisdiction and the local laws in place that protect individuals against discriminatory treatment.

Dawn Lyon, Zillow Chief Corporate Relations Officer, said:

“In lieu of federal law and in the spirit of 'turning on the lights,' we want to give people the most information possible when buying, renting and financing a home, including which communities provide equal protection under the law for all."

Zillow proudly supports the Equality Act, a movement to make discrimination within a number of societal aspects, a federal issue and protect those most vulnerable to discrimination under federal law instead of just state-by-state.

This isn’t the first time Zillow has shown its progressive hand. While in the midst of the market crisis earlier this year, Zillow CEO said that remote work, something that isn’t very popular in the States, was something the CEO would absolutely consider as a viable option for employees moving forward. The CEO has come out in support of the BLM movement, as well.

Zillow vows to support the idea that everyone deserves a place to call home, no matter their race, nationality, religion, sexual and gender preference, etc. The company is continuing its investment in producing resources aimed to aid those the most in need.
